Resit evalutation

Project Evaluation.
Project introduction
The unit ‘Make up in motion’ involves two major aspects, the first ‘What the Dickens’ assessed our skills in continuity and looked at whether we as makeup artists would be able to create the same look more than once, as if we were on a real job in the industry such as a theatre. The second was Claudia and Quentin where our designing and creative skills were used to create characters that seemed like they would fit in with a horror series of our choice
How I saw my characters developing.
For Claudia and Quentin I could see a major improvement throughout the development of my character. This was clear as throughout my sketch blog it is clear to see that as I used other texts and researched the makings of a successful horror character/villain I was able to bring my ideas to life. In terms of Miss Havisham and Estella it is clear to see my characters developing with photographic evidence by practicing the looks in class.
How I used ideas from text, film and historical references to inform design for the characters
With regards to Miss Havisham and Estella I started by reading the Charles Dickens novel and watching different adaptations of the novel through the media of film. This informed my design as I could then gage an idea of the characters in their personalities. Also the use of films and texts then allowed me to use the characters states of mind to inform my design work. The use of historical references informed my designs by giving me an idea of how makeup was applied and hair was styles during that time period.
In terms of Claudia and Mrs.Laderman, I watched episodes of the horror series I had chosen and looked at horror books. This allowed me to look at characters that existed in actual horror on tv that then informed the looks and personality of the characters.
Progress of my designing process for this project.
My progress of the design process of my Miss Havisham and Estella was very steady as there was so much to explore in terms of historical elements, there was also a lot of different adaptations of the novel in films which I could also look at. However I found the progress of my designing of Claudia and Mrs. Laderman were not as steady, this is because although you could look at the elements that went into creating the perfect horror character over time, you had to focus on that particular series, which I found there was not that much to look at.
How overall character design impact on viewing figures and potential audience.
The main element of character design that would impact viewing figures and potential audience when designing Miss Havisham and Estella was that you had to design the characters for either film and tv or theatre, if the makeup was too strong for film and tv or too soft for theatre this would impact audience figures.
An attributing factor to viewing figures and potential audience would be that I needed to create a character that would fit with and be adopted by the general age of the audience. For example the tv series I chose had a mainly teenage audience, so I created characters I thought would fit with this.

How I overcame problems with design, materials and gathering my research
To overcome problems with design I would say the main thing that I have done is practice. For example something may have looked good in the design process but when it came to creating the real look, it didn’t. Therefore I feel the main thing was to practice.
How I found working to the brief.
I found working to this brief ok. I feel that both parts of the unit were very different in terms of design, however the skills needed were quite similar. Having to sections of the brief being quite different was good as this meant that I did not lose interest in the project overall.
What I did to improve my work and what I would do differently.
To improve my work I have put more effort into the design process. By this I have created more face charts, particularly with the design for Claudia and Mrs. Laderman. Also I believe that I have thought more about the characters this time. In terms of what I would do differently I would say that I would look at horror in history more, as I believe this would again improve my work.

Claudia and Quentin Evaluation.

The second brief we were given this term was to create two characters that would be able to fit into our choice of different horror tv shows. The show that I decided to choose was American Horror Story and the season I chose to create my characters in was 'Coven'.

How did I overcome problems with the design and materials?
I don't really see myself as having any problems with the design of these characters, I had previously watched this series and therefore felt that I would be able to create my own character quite successfully. However one problem that I did have was the fact that I wanted to shoot both my characters on location instead of one in the studio as although the studio contains harsher lighting to be able to judge the makeup skills better, I felt for the overall look they would have been more successful with them both on location.

How did I develop my character research?
To develop my character research I began by watching clips from the series to have an analytical look at what the characters were wearing and the design of their makeup. I then decided to research into different witches throughout horror as I thought this would give me a good understanding of what is expected when you create a character like this.

How did I find it working to the brief?
I really liked this brief. I thought it was exciting and gave you a chance to express your skills in a non confined way, the brief was very open and you could essentially create whatever character you wanted (within reason). However as I have previously stated I would have rather the brief allowed you to be able to shoot both characters on location instead of one having to be done in the studio.

Final images for Mrs Laderman

Here are my final images for Mrs Laderman. Although I like the idea behind this design, I don't think I have executed it as well as I could have. I think looking back at this I will have to apply the makeup heavier as it struggled to show up on the camera. However saying this I think the bright colour of the blood looks quite striking against the other colours.

Face charts for Mrs Laderman

Face charts for Claudia.

Final images for Claudia.

Here are my final images for my Claudia look. With the makeup I have added the red lips as this holds connotations of blood, the devil and being evil. With this I have decided to have dark eye makeup, as within horror TV shows a look that shows visible make up, gives the character a darker feeling. I have decided to use a blonde model as this refers to the fact that there are two types of blonde characters in the horror genre, this being the ones that are often stupid and are killed in the drama first and the other being an evil character that is disguised as being innocent.
I like the outcome of this shoot, I think the setting fits in well with the concept of witches as it is a dark forest and I believe that the styling really reflects the fact that Claudia is from the American Horror Story season coven which is about witches.

Mrs Laderman Mood board

Here is my mood board for the character of Mrs Laderman. This mood board I feel explains the two sides to Mrs Laderman's character with the dark and more natural makeup looks. The styling has also been explained by the images you can see with the woman dressed in all black and lace. The image at the top left of the mood board signifies that there will be blood present on the characters finger, this is a visual aid that signifies that Mrs Laderman has blood on her hands and is not the innocent neighbour that Claudia sees, as she only sees the sweet side to Mrs Laderman.

Character development: Claudia.

When creating my version of Claudia I want to create a character that feels like there are different elements to her personality. I feel like the fact that within the story Claudia is supposed to treat Quentin quite badly in the fact that she locks him away in a room, is the darker side to Claudia. I will aim to convey this through the use of the colour red. The red element will be in the bows in Claudia's hair and her lip colour.
This is a parody on the other element of Claudia's character as she will be wearing a typically young hairstyle (pig tails that have been curled) as this holds connotations of being innocent and kind, which is how I believe Claudia represents herself to the world, whereas she is not all that she seems to be. Again this sense of innocence will be represented through the styling in which Claudia will be wearing a shirt and skirt, that give her the 'school girl' type look that is present in the America Horror Story season Coven. Once again the styling will reflect the various aspects to Claudia's character as the skirt I am planning to style Claudia in will be leather, which holds connotations of being daring and somewhat sexually free.
I have chosen a blonde girl to model Claudia as she is going to represent one of the two blonde characters that are present in the horror genre. The first is the typcical 'dumb blonde' that is sexually free and always killed first and the second is the one who is more tough, who doesn't take advice and feels that they are better than the rest of the world. I believe that Claudia will represent the second blonde girl in this horror show.

American Horror Story mood board

Here is the mood board around the Horror show that I have chosen to base my characters Claudia and Mrs Laderman. The show I have chosen will be Amercian Horror story, the season called 'Coven'. From this mood board you can gain an understanding of the situation and life that the characters will be a part of.

Claudia Mood Board

Here is my mood board for the character Claudia. As you can see I have taken inspiration on the styling (this being mainly black clothing). From my research I have found that most modern witches wear the hats that can be seen in my mood board, therefore I think I will use this in my design. Furthermore from these pictures I believe you get an idea on the attitude from Claudia. My interpretation of Claudia is that she will be quite a snob. Also as you can see on the mood board there are hints of red on the makeup design (from the lips and the nail varnish) I will include this in my own designs as the colour red holds many connotations, from love and passion to the devil and blood.

American Horror Story Coven

An introduction to my chosen horror show.
For my Claudia and Quentin Brief I have decided to chose the horror show 'American Horror story: Coven'. I chose this because I have previously watched all the series of this show and feel as though I could best create characters that will fit into this tv series. Coven is situated around a group of teenage witches that are having to discover who the next supreme witch is, keep their coven from extinction, keep up with their rivalry with the voodoo witches and find out how to manage their own powers. There are various different characters in this show, all of the girls have different personalities and looks however most of them dress in a similar style, one that signifies that they are a part of a coven. This consists of all black outfits and black hats. The outfits that most of the characters are usually styled in involves a lot of black lace and leather, this gives an element of sex and luxury to the aesthetics. The design of the makeup depends on each character, for example some keep the makeup natural whereas others will be a little more daring with their makeup. This tv show appeals to most of a teenage demographic as it has elements of romance, fantasy, horror and the characters are played by well known teenage actresses such as Emma Roberts. American Horror Story has become very popular since it's first series because it involves the same actors in every series, except they play a different role and character each time. The reason that I believe this has made American Horror Story so successful is the fact that the audience come to love each actor and their different role and this gives them a sense of knowing them.

Different adaptations of witches.

American Horror story Coven:

This genre of witch embodies a new modern style. They are wearing the traditional black style that witches have been seen in for years however the outfits always have an element of sex appeal in them, this either from the use of black lace or leather. The witches in this tv series do not like to go unnoticed, which is the opposite to what most dramas that contain a witch are like.

'The Witches of East End'.
The witches in this series look very different to that of the witches in American Horror Story. This could be because this drama is not horror, therefore the clothing is much more standard in the fact that it looks like what most teenage girls and women wear. The makeup looks more demure and natural, however the styling of the setting looks a little spooky.

Sleepy Hollow
This I feel represents what the traditional witch looked like. For example you can see that the characters are wearing cloaks and the clothing looks overall more 'gothic' with the large square belt (this reminds me of a typical childs halloween costume), the corset and the long skirt. The styling in terms of makeup is again what I expected to see (darker eyes and lips).

Into the woods
Again I think this seems to embody what witches are stereotypically supposed to look like. For example the character is old, her hair is grey, long and straggly and she is wearing all black. Her nails are very long and the way that she has been positioned in this photograph is quite bent and therefore spooky. Furthermore this version of a witch has a pointier nose and chin, again a stereotype of witches.

Great Expectations Evalutation.

The first brief that we were given was to create our own interpretation of the characters Miss Havisham and either Estella or Pip from the Charles Dickens novel 'Great Expectations'.
I feel that this was quite a hard brief, this was because I didn't initially realise how difficult it was to recreate your work to the exact same standard and look that you had done on another occasion.

How did I overcome problems with the design and materials?
The problem that I had with the design was not making it look too complicated, for example in my initial face charts I wanted to include much more work on burns and wounds, however I thought this would make Miss Havisham and especially Estella look too over crowded and therefore I decided that less was more with these looks.

How did I develop my character research?
I developed my character research by watching two different versions of tv adaptions of this novel and by reading the book. I then went on to look at different pictures and analyse these versions of each characters.

How did I find it working to the brief?
I found working to the brief ok, however as I have previously stated I found it more difficult than I originally thought it would be to recreate work to the exact same look that I had previously done two weeks before that.
I feel that this breif was a good one and I liked the fact that it was challenging for me.

Miss Havisham assessment 2: Continuity images

Here are the studio images that I took from the continuity part of this brief where we had to recreate the work that we previously created with Miss Havisham. I feel as though they look very similar, particularly the hair (although it looks slightly more messy on the first assessment). In terms of the makeup, again I believe this looks very similar although the lips on the continuity images look darker. Despite this I am happy with how this part of the brief went and I think that I have done quite a good job.

Final Miss Havisham Images. (Assesment 1)

Here are the studio images I took from my assessment creating Miss Havisham. I believe that the ovrall outcome of this was good and I think it looks like my face chart and designs therefore I am happy with this look that I have created.

Primary research: Gothic horror Locations.

For an element of my primary research I have taken a look at common horror locations.
When I think of horror locations from films that I have watched, my mind leads me to abandoned houses, graveyards, old houses and the woods.  Living in a rural area surrounded by trees and older building this was quite an easy tasks. Here are some of the images I managed to capture.

This first image was taken down a road leading to the woods. This I feel is a very sppoky image as the way the camera is angled makes the road look like it gets smaller. This I think is quite common in horror films as the characters who come into contact with a path like this are usually running 'to their doom'.

This image is taken at an old hall. This I think has an element of the horror genre in as everything is dark and the lighting looks quite eery, this is also fitting with this genre as many horror scenes are filmed in an old location.

Here in another image I have taken, this time in a church that I live near. When thinking of the horror genre churches and graveyards are the number one thing that comes to mind.

Here is another image from the church. I felt this gate fit perfectly with the horror genre because of the crosses at the top. When seeing these crosses it leads you to think of God and Satan, this is a common theme in horror films such as 'The exorcism'. The fact that this is in a graveyard also fits the horror theme because of the age old fear of the unknown and if ghosts and haunting truly exist.

Finally this is a tree outside my house. I think this looks spooky simply because of how tall and big the tree is, this leading you to feel small and uneasy next to it.

All of my images were taken at night as this way I felt I would be able to engage with what surrounding scared me more successfully.

Miss Havisham face chart and instructions.

Here is my face chart and instructions ready for my assessment on Miss Havisham. As you can see I have my brain storming ideas, a step by step guide to how I plan to create the look and face chart on how I am hoping this will turn out.
